It’s 1970 in Woodstock, New York when 33-year-old singer Karen Dalton rolls into town with her black 12-string guitar. The once-thriving folk scene has been eclipsed by rock’n’roll, and the Summer of Love is now just a distant memory. Karen is here to record her second album, In My Own Time, hoping to make her mark in the music industry. Her heartfelt interpretations of other musicians’ songs have been praised by critics and her voice is one of a kind – sad and broken and beautiful all at once. But it’s also out of step with the contemporary scene. In a last-ditch effort to boost record sales, Karen goes on a European tour as the opening act for the psych-rock band Santana. She’s set to perform for her biggest audiences yet, including a gig at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival. It could be her big break…if she can only gather the nerves to unlock her dressing room door and go onstage.
